Eratosthenes was scholarly in many subjects, amongst them astronomy, mathematics, geography, philosophy, and poetry. Born around 276 B.C. in Cyrene which is now Shahhat, Libya.
King Ptolemy III of Alexandria appointed him chief librarian of the library of Alexandria around 240 B.C.
